This rich and fragrant pear butter, infused with vanilla bean, is the ultimate cozy treat for your morning toast or as a filling for pastries. The natural sweetness of ripe pears, combined with the warmth of vanilla, creates a smooth and velvety spread that’s perfect for fall and winter.

Ingredients:

  • 6-8 ripe pears (Bartlett, Anjou, or Bosc work well)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 vanilla bean (or 1 tablespoon vanilla extract)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Pears

  • Peel, core, and chop the pears into small pieces. No need to remove the skins if you’re using a blender or food processor later, as the skin will soften during cooking and can add flavor and texture.

2. Cook the Pears

  • In a large saucepan, combine the chopped pears, sugar, and lemon juice.
  • Split the vanilla bean lengthwise and scrape the seeds into the pot, adding the pod as well for extra flavor. Alternatively, add the vanilla extract directly.
  • Add cinnamon, ginger, and a pinch of salt if desired.
  • Cook the mixture over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the pears break down and release their juices, about 15-20 minutes.

3. Blend the Pears

  • Once the pears are soft, remove the pot from heat and discard the vanilla bean pod.
  • Use an immersion blender to puree the pear mixture until smooth. Alternatively, you can transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor to puree.

4. Simmer and Thicken

  • Return the pureed pear mixture to the pot and simmer over low heat for another 30-45 minutes, stirring frequently, until it thickens and reaches the consistency of a spreadable butter.
  • Stir occasionally and be careful not to let it burn on the bottom.

5. Test the Consistency

  • To test the thickness, place a spoonful of the pear butter on a chilled plate and run your finger through it. If it wrinkles and doesn’t run back together, it’s ready. If it’s too runny, continue cooking until it thickens.

6. Fill and Seal the Jars

  • Sterilize your jars by boiling them in water for 10 minutes.
  • Ladle the hot pear butter into the sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of headspace.
  • Wipe the rims clean, place the lids on, and screw the rings on snugly.

7. Optional Water Bath Canning

  • For long-term storage, process the jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes.
  • Remove the jars and let them cool on a towel or rack. Ensure the lids are sealed properly before storing.

Storage:

  • Properly sealed jars can be stored in a cool, dark place for up to 1 year.
  • Once opened, refrigerate and consume within 2-3 weeks.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Spread on toast, muffins, or pancakes for a cozy breakfast.
  • Use as a filling for pastries, tarts, or pies.
  • Stir into oatmeal, yogurt, or chia pudding for extra flavor.
  • Pair with cheese and crackers for a sweet-savory snack.

Tips for Success:

  • Use ripe, flavorful pears for the best texture and natural sweetness.
  • If you prefer a smoother butter, strain out any solids before storing.
  • You can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less sugar, depending on the ripeness of the pears.

This vanilla bean pear butter is a comforting, flavorful spread that will elevate your morning routine and make your kitchen smell like fall!
